Frequently Asked Questions

Learning to Swim: Program Details

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as each child is unique and their comfort level in the water affects how quickly they learn to swim. For example, a child who is anxious about water may take longer to adjust compared to one who enjoys it.

At Swim4Life, we offer a supportive and engaging 5-step learn-to-swim program that caters to every child—regardless of age or ability. Our approach, built on many years of experience, ensures that children can learn at their own pace, from babies to school-age swimmers.

The Swim4Life program is built on years of swimming experience. That’s why our classes are 30 minutes long. To further support our students’ learning, we limit each class to a maximum of 4 students. This promotes concentration, reduces distractions, and ensures that each child receives dedicated attention from our passionate, industry-accredited teachers.

We have a tailored program which caters for every age and skill level. Our program is structured as Baby, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Adult stages. Upon mastering the skills required in that level, progress through our structured swim program. Our straightforward approach means it’s easy to find the right class for you or your child.

At Swim4Life, we understand that some learners prefer personalised instructions and progressing at their own pace. Instructors can tailor lesson plans to target specific skills, making the experience more effective and enjoyable. With flexible scheduling and a supportive environment for anxious swimmers or those with special needs, private lessons enhance safety and provide a positive swimming journey for every child.

Our highly trained, industry-qualified teachers, who hold Working with Children Checks, are dedicated to water safety while providing a fun and engaging learning environment. They focus on building strong relationships with each student, ensuring personalised attention and care. To continually improve their skills, all our teachers undergo extensive annual training, guaranteeing your child the best possible experience.

Swimming, like any new skill, requires practice and consistency. Weekly classes allow your child to progressively learn skills and gain comfort in the water. Extended breaks from lessons can halt their progress, and if they’re at a critical learning stage, it may even lead to regression. For instance, if your child is beginning to trust the water’s support, a break could diminish that trust and set back their skills. It’s important to remember that each child develops their aquatic abilities at their own pace, so experiences may vary.

Our simple 5 step swim program is designed to cater to each stage of a child’s swim journey, as well as helping them to achieve their personalised swim goals. We offer classes for babies, toddlers, school age children, and adolescents. Should your child wish to take their skills to the next level we offer advanced stroke correction where students are taught how to build their endurance to the point where they can start to swim kilometres.

Regardless of age or goals, before terminating swim classes we recommend that the minimum skill your child should have is the ability to swim at least 100m unassisted without goggles. This is to help them be safer in normal still water environments such as lakes, slow flowing creeks, dams and swimming pools, as well as areas where water is in motion (e.g., swimming in the surf, creeks or rivers).

Gear and Swimwear

Your child is free to wear whichever swimwear they would feel most comfortable to swim in, this could range from briefs to swim suits. For toddlers, there are various options available, including snug swimsuits and swim nappies.
We encourage children to participate in swim classes without goggles to prioritise safety and prepare them for emergencies. If a child accidentally falls into water, they’re unlikely to have goggles on, so we focus on helping them feel comfortable without them. Once your child is confident swimming without goggles, they can wear them while building strength and stamina for longer distances. We understand that each child is unique, so please contact us to discuss your child’s special requirements.

Booking and Cancellation

Our Swim4Life locations offer a year-round swimming program instead of a term-based schedule, ensuring continuity in each student’s swim journey and optimising skill development.

To make things easier for families, once you secure a permanent spot at your local school, your class time is reserved. This means you attend lessons on the same day and time each week without needing to rebook. If your schedule changes—such as when your child starts school—simply log into our Client Portal to adjust your class time easily.

Here at Swim4Life, we offer a flexible rescheduling and make-up class policy, allowing unlimited makeup classes within a 6 month validity period. It’s quick and easy to reschedule a lesson all in our Client Portal. You can find more information on our make-up class policies page. Please contact your local Swim4Life club to confirm the cut-off time to reschedule a lesson or for any further enquiries.
We offer flexible payment options to support all our families, including Online payments via MYS4L Portal credit card, direct debit, and Bank transfer. We recommend reaching out to your nearest Swim4Life location to find out which options are available.

Health and Safety

We’re proud to say we use chlorine-free, heated mineral water for a gentler experience. With magnesium saltwater maintained at 32 degrees year-round, we offer the ideal setting for swimmers of all ages.
This is a common concern, but swimming itself doesn’t cause colds or the flu; these illnesses are caused by viruses. Swimming in winter can actually boost your child’s immune system. Just make sure they dry off and change out of wet clothes promptly to stay warm. Prioritising the health and safety of our families and community, if your child feels unwell, it’s best to keep them home until they recover.
